Elbow Pain

Elbow painElbow the joint that lets your arm do a lot of jobs which you don’t even notice unless it starts to hurt and hinder your normal tasks. It is complex joint involved in a good number of functions. Pain tends to arise due to overuse, physical exertion, strain, injury, irritation or inflammation of any of the elbow structures. There could be multiple reasons for elbow pain, and genetically predisposed or people with degenerative changes get this pain more easily with over exertion of the joint. Most of the people get it between the age of 30-50years of age

Elbow joint; in the middle of the arm, the two long bones of the forearm; radius the bone on the side of thumb and the other bone ulna on the side of pinky of the hand meet the long bone of upper arm (humerus). This joint lets the arm move up, down and rotate or twist inward or outward. Like any other joint of the body there are cartilages, ligaments and muscle tendons attached to the bones.

The cause of the elbow pain will be some kind of injury to any of the elbow components. Commonly the pain is not due to serious condition. The reasons could be arthritis, tendinitis, bursitis, sprains or fractures.

Tendinitis is the inflammation of the tendons attached on the inner side or the outer side of the joint. Tennis elbow is a common name for the outer side tendon involvement. It is seen that 30% people who have to use their hands in repetitive movement tend to suffer from tennis elbow. In the same way golfers elbow occurs when there is repetitive hand, wrist or forearm motion. Tiny tears in tendon may occur and cause the inflammation. It is not necessary that only tennis players or golfers get these, carpenters, butchers, painter, plumbers and even house wives can suffer from it. Bursitis is the inflamed bursa (a fluid filled sac between the bones tendon and muscles). A swelling may appear at the tip of the elbow due to some minor trauma or injury or systemic diseases like RA or gout or infection. Sprains may occur due to over stretching or jamming of the arm, one or more ligaments may get stretched or torn. Fractures can also happen at the elbow joint. Systemic diseases like arthritis or degenerative changes cause inflammation and pain in the elbow.
