What Hand Symptoms Say!

Humans, the most developed among all the species on the face of the earth. Of all the assets humans have, hands are the paramount. Our hands are of enormous importance and are capable of doing amazing advanced movements. The thumb’s position and its intricate range of motion, combined with fingers, let us to do many maneuvers needed in millions of tasks we do, daily in our routines. This pair needs to be taken care of as an asset.

Hand has 27-29 bones, joining to make 15 joints which give it the extreme mobility. There are 34 muscles, 3 major nerves and arteries further dividing into small braches to make a network which is responsible for continuous to and fro flow of stimuli and blood supply. The skin makes a glove, which anchored to the bone through connective tissue and layer of fascia is present under the skin. Due to such a huge number of structures present here and vast usage of hand, the possibility of problems is also great. Many conditions, mild to serious diseases or disorders can become cumbersome and some can even cause permanent damage to our hands.

There is no one, who can claim that they never had any problem with their hand. Pain being the most common symptom in the hand, can range from mild ache to throbbing pain and at times it could be felt as burning sensation. For some, daily tasks become difficult to perform. Other symptoms that could be present in the hand are tenderness, restricted range of motion, swelling, redness, warmth, and weakness of muscles.

Statistically sprain and strains are the most common problems seen in the hand. Hand fractures or infection can be serious matters. Here are some of the common conditions, in brief only. The detailed of these will be discussed separately.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome; patient has symptoms like tingling, numbness, muscle weakness or pain in hand caused by compressed nerve in the carpal tunnel present at wrist joint.
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome; this occurs due to a nerve being compressed in a tunnel near the funny bone. The symptoms are felt in the little finger and a part of ring finger.
  • Arthritis; joint inflammation, disease that may attack one or more joints of the hand. Leading to pain and stiffness.
    • Osteoarthritis; a common form of arthritis which is degenerative (wear and tear) in nature resulting from cartilage corrosion.
    • Infectious arthritis; extremely painful condition, caused due to infection in the joint. The infection comes here from some other part of the body.
    • Gout; the joint become extremely painful or tender, it is warm to touch and swelling is also there. A type of infectious arthritis, due to deposits of uric acid crystal in between the joint. Classically it is recurrent attacks of acute inflammatory arthritis.
  • Cervical radiculopathy; some symptoms become apparent in the hand due to compression of nerve root in the neck area.
  • Tendon pain; pain and tenderness and sometimes weakness and restricted movement are there.
    • Trigger digit; the digit gets stuck and locked before straightening, movement is limited.
    • Tendonitis; the inflammation of tendons of hand is one condition.
    • Tenosynovitis; inflammation of the covering of the tendon, an example is De Quervain’s disease.
  • Bursitis; inflammation of small padding in-between the joints (bursae) acting as cushion, is a painful condition.
  • Cellulitis; swelling, pain, redness and warmth develop in the area where there is bacterial infection under the skin most commonly where there is broken skin.
  • Ganglion cyst; non-cancerous, cyst (sac) filled with jelly like substance is harmless mostly but if it press nerve than symptoms can arise.
  • Dupuytren’s contracture; a progressive condition which occurs due to thickening of connective tissue sheet under the skin. Eventually causing the fingers to remain permanently bent.
  • Repetitive motion syndrome; occurs due to repetitive abuse of joint and patient comes with complain of pain, tenderness or swelling e.g. Writer’s cramp and many other occupation have different names for it.
  • Contusion or abrasion; any area that is scraped or worn and injure without breaking of the skin is called contusion or bruise.
  • Dislocation/luxation; is when one or more bones get displaced at a joint, partial dislocation or separation is called subluxation. Trauma is its main cause.
  • Fracture; if the bone breaks it is called fracture and it will presented with pain, tenderness and swelling.
  • Sprain; it is the stretching or tearing of the ligaments occurring due to sudden or violent twist, jerk or pull at the joint.
  • Strain; is the injury to the muscle tendon due to over stretching by sudden violent force.
